The three radio stations (initially in Treherbert then Penrhys and Penywaun) are all part of the RCT Community Radio Project which aims to make Rhondda Cynon Taff the centre of excellence for Community Radio in Wales. It follows the award of more than £270k funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s flagship Communities@One programme to fund the project.

Communities @One is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative to help people in Communities First areas make the most of new technology. The programme is jointly funded through the European Union’s Objective 1 & 2 programme and the Welsh Assembly Government. Communities @One is administered by the Wales Co-Operative Centre.

Background

Community radio started in Rhondda Cynon Taff in 1999 when GTFM went on air on the Glyntaff Estate in Pontypridd in the same way as Radio Cwmni is now. Local residents tuned in and enjoyed the programmes and young and old alike took part in a whole range of ways. After several hugely successful month long broadcasts it then became Wales’s first full time community station in 2002.

In 2006 we received funding from Communities@One to develop community radio and stations will be established in Treherbert, Penywaun and Penrhys as part of the RCT Community Radio Partnership.

Rhys Radio is operated by the Penrhys Partnership and broadcasts live from the Canolfan Rhys Arts Centre on Penrhys. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day on 87.7FM and is part of the RCT Community Radio partnership which operates community radio stations in Treherbert, Penrhys and Penywaun.

The Penrhys Partnership was established in 1991 with a clear priority of "enabling Penrhys to become a community to which people wish to belong".
In 1993, Y Ffynnon Centre - "the Village Centre", was developed. The refurbishment of two derelict maisonettes created a complex, housing seven residential units, a Doctor's Surgery, a Post Office, a Grocery Store, Offices for both the Tenants Association (Penrhys Community Action Group) and Penrhys Partnership and also a Training and Education Centre. The success of education, music and art programmes at Llanfair (Partnership member), 1997 saw the realisation and opening of the award winning Arts and Education Centre - Canolfan Rhys. It provides a range of community arts programmes – and is the home of Rhys Radio. With the emphasis of personal development and using the arts as a tool for regeneration, the centre houses a recording studio, performance area, art and music workshops, dark room and multi media computer suite. Accommodation is also provided for residencies, with three bedsits and two houses.

Environmental developments, have included: a local Heritage Trail encompassing St. Mary's Well; St. Mary's Statute; an outdoor Amphitheatre (1992) and the Penrhys Millennium Beacon.
